June has arrived, which means Father’s Day is fast approaching (it’s next week, in fact!). Last month was all about paying tribute to our wondermoms, and this month, we’re celebrating all the superdads out there. Our pick this month is a heartwarming father-son story by Gennifer Choldenko about gaining courage and facing your fears… featuring one special little dinosaur.
What is it about?
A young boy named Nicholas is afraid of many things. Still, he dreams to be just like the most fearless, the bravest person in the world: his father. Luckily Nicholas has a pocket-sized dinosaur that he brings everywhere to give him the courage he needs, because dinosaurs aren’t afraid of anything at all. But when his dinosaur goes missing, suddenly his courage seems to have left him, too. Lost without his dinosaur, Nicholas is faced with his biggest fear yet—the fear of disappointing his dad.
We love it because…
Not many children’s books talk about the relationship between a father and his son, or feature many dads in general, but this book does it so beautifully. The vibrant illustrations and glowing hues on each page set the mood of the story, and the message it conveys helps get the conversation about coping with fear, no matter what it is. More importantly, however, this story is about the beauty that comes out of being open and vulnerable with parents, and of being accepting of little ones.
