“We are all part of the natural world, and nature tells us that Life is about change. It is also about love. I think children will understand this.” - Cynthia Rylant on Life
Life by Cynthia Rylant is January's #MebookoftheMonth. It is another out-of-the-blue piece of writing from Newbery Medalist, Cynthia Rylant. Her inspiration for this book came from her inner calling to accept the inevitable big changes in life.
What is this book about?
There are so many wonderful things about life, both in good times and in times of struggle — that often we take for granted. Through the eyes of the world’s animals — including elephants, monkeys, whales, and more — Cynthia Rylant and Brendan Wenzel offer a moving meditation on finding appreciation for the world at large everyday and finding strength in adversity.
We love it because...
The subtle beauty of the text complements the beautiful illustrations, creating a reflective mood on life and love that can be appreciated by children and adults alike. And, as we know life circles back upon itself, so too does Life, opening and closing with “life that begins small and grows”.
Both Rylant and Wenzel are strong proponents of conservation — skillfully weaving the prevalent environmental issue into the book. Rylant has shown a particular love of animals, and Wenzel collaborating with organisations that protect threatened environments and species. This shared passion can be seen as Life reminds readers that there is always something to love, and always "something to protect," depicting first a dog and a cat, then a gorilla and a polar bear. It slowly moves from our domestic pets which we’re accustomed to protecting, to animals in more grave need of our attention. Each page turn reinforces the idea that animals have a right to life — and healthy environments — as it also speaks in a broader context about what it is to exist and to be human.
This book is full of life. And we know you’ll just love it!
